When we started heating with air conditioning, it was a completely unknown phenomenon. I was the first customer our installer wanted to install air conditioning units as heating. Our corner house, built in the 1970s, has double glazing and is moderately to reasonably insulated. Despite this limited insulation, we weren't cold, but we did rely on some central heating on days when the temperature dropped below 5 degrees Celsius. I was certainly annoyed by that at first. But did we use a lot of gas? No, absolutely not, because that doesn't happen that often. But it does indicate that a higher capacity for our downstairs area might have been appropriate. For the first year, I also heated my attic office with an air conditioner. This worked perfectly, but because the attic has a pitched roof, all the heat is drawn there. It remained cold under my desk, so I installed an additional infrared panel there. For the second and third years, I used infrared heating above my workstation. Initially, I used a slightly too-small 400-watt panel, which I wasn't happy with. But later, I'll use a 750-watt panel with a thermostat. And I have to say, I find that much more comfortable in this room than heating with the air conditioner. I hardly even need the panel under the desk anymore. Everyone will say that the air conditioner is much more energy-efficient, but in practice, it turns out to be much better. Our electricity consumption has been very stable over the years. What you need to realize with air conditioners is that you're heating your house individually. If you want to heat your bedrooms because you have growing children who want to play there or do their homework, you'll need to find a good solution for that as well. And you also want your bathroom to be comfortably warm at the right times. In that situation, a heat pump connected to your central heating might be a better idea. But of course, there are also requirements, such as good insulation. So, what are the pros and cons for me in a nutshell? Pros: • The room heats up very quickly • You use little to no gas for heating • You can offset extra electricity consumption with the energy generated by your solar panels • With a smart home battery, you always use the cheapest electricity. My electricity price before February was 21 euro cents, including taxes. • So the biggest advantage is the energy bill. Cons: • You heat per room • The noise an air conditioner makes • The outdoor unit needs to defrost regularly in winter • And in our case: Additional heating at low outdoor temperatures. But that doesn't apply in all cases. Would I have done things differently? I still think that for our type of house and our home situation (the kids have left home), this solution would have been the most effective and financially advantageous. Perhaps a proper heat loss calculation for our living room would have led to a more powerful air conditioner. And if you only want to heat and not cool, consider an air conditioner that you set low. Warm air rises anyway. But I'd also love to hear your findings and tips so everyone can better assess what might be a good solution for them. So, do you have any tips or advice? Leave them in the comments. Until next time.
