The whole valley knows the custom: see one fall, make a wish, tell no one. Everyone watches for a little while and goes to bed. She stays. All three nights, twelve years running, with a blanket and a slate, counting. Last year: three hundred and eleven falls. Somebody should keep the books. The falls come thickest in the hour before dawn, when almost no one's watching. The sky saves its best for the faithful. Most generous things do. The heavy wishes climb her hill now — the fisherman's wife in the bad season, the boy before his first voyage — and when one falls she says "there — that one's yours —" and they go down the hill lighter. Do falling stars grant wishes? Twelve years of books, and the honest finding: the people who climb a hill in the cold to wish deliberately at the sky tend to be the people who then go DO something about it. So yes. They work.
