IN YOUR EYES | PETER GABRIEL | DRUM COVER

Here is this classic track "In Your Eyes" from Peter Gabriel´s "SO" album from 1986. I´ve been a big big fan of Peter Gabriel and Manu for ages and I still remember especially Gabriel´s "Secret World Live" concert VHS I almost wore out to death!! Also, him and Vinnie Colaiuta was one of the reason´s I just stopped using splash cymbals many moons ago - and I guess could get fired on a gig for using them when it really wasn´t the flavour of the day - well. almost!! haha Anyway - for this track I felt it really needed them, and what struck me is that they really helped to get a lighter sound and feel. I usually kinda like it a bit heavy though. So it was nice to say hello to them again - if only for a little bit. As I have kindly learned here - Manu Katche played the talking drum part on the original studio recording and the main drum part was performed by Jerry Marotta. I also had an idea to incorporate the Octobans and Gong drum in this song (which there originally aren´t any of that). But it has kinda of a World beat and african thing to it, so I thought it would be cool to try someting like that. I slowly started working out a pattern that I felt could work, yet at the same time be interesting enough. And I came up with a four bar pattern.Then it was a matter of learning it - the coordination, a relaxed feel and I also was a bit inspired by The Police and Stewart Copeland here, and therefore added a Tape Delay on the Octobans as well. Just to further propel the groove along which I felt was kinda nice. In the pre chorus I also thought about using the two hi-hat´s as another approach. At the very end of the song - the last couple of choruses - I also added the Octobans and Gong drum to the chorus groove - just to have a bit more of a climax thing going on - and it struck me that that groove would be almost impossible to play with the Octobans on the more "traditional" left side of the kit. So that was very fun to do. JJust to be clear - this was an intensely difficult song for me to play, and I think I got it down on Take number 13 or something!!! haha And after each take I messed up, I just yelled out loud to myself, "FUUUCK this song is DIFFICULT!!!" The off beat accents, the transitions and all was quite challenging for me, but yeah - it was a very fun challenge to try and make it work - even though I made it very difficult for myself with all these patterns and stuff.
