Benandanti : Les Chasseurs de Sorciers - Histoire de Sorcellerie

The Benandanti were a group of people who claimed to be witch fighters in the Friuli region of Italy during the 16th and 17th centuries. The term "Benandanti" literally means "those who walk by night" in Friulian, the local language. According to their beliefs, the Benandanti were chosen by divine forces to fight in spirit against witches and evil forces during their nocturnal journeys. They claimed to leave their bodies while they slept to enter the spiritual battlefield and protect their communities from evil spirits. The Benandanti also believed they were favored by the moon and were often described as traveling in the form of animals such as wolves, cats, or grasshoppers during their spiritual journeys. They used specific herbs and rituals to prepare for their nighttime battles. The Benandanti were generally considered benevolent figures and were respected in their communities. They claimed their mission was to protect crops, harvests, and livestock from the evil influence of witches. They met regularly to share experiences, discuss potential threats, and prepare defense strategies. However, beginning in the 16th century, the Catholic Inquisition considered the Benandanti a heretical sect and persecuted them. Members of this group were accused of witchcraft and pacts with the devil, although the Benandanti claimed to act in the name of God. The Inquisition's interrogations left written records of their beliefs and practices. Over time, the Benandanti disappeared as a distinct group, mainly due to the Inquisition's repression and social changes. Today, their history is known primarily through Inquisition documents and the work of researchers interested in this period of Italian history.
