মধ্যযুগে চট্টগ্রাম ছিল বিশ্বের কাঠের জাহাজ নির্মাণ শিল্পের অন্যতম প্রধান কেন্দ্র। এখানে তৈরি কাঠের জাহাজ একসময় রপ্তানি হতো তুরস্ক, মিশর এমনকি ইউরোপের দেশ জার্মানিতেও। তবে সময়ের সাথে লোহার জাহাজ কাঠের জাহাজের স্থান দখল করে নেওয়ায় চট্টগ্রামের এ শিল্প ১৯ শতকের শেষ দিকে হারিয়ে যায়। তবে চট্টগ্রামের সমুদ্রগামী মাছ ধরার বড় নৌকাগুলো তৈরির ক্ষেত্রে ছোট পরিসরে হলেও, আগের নির্মাণশিল্পের ঐতিহ্য এখনো দেখা যায়। কাঠের তৈরি এসব মাছ ধরার নৌকা তৈরি হয় কর্ণফুলী নদীর উত্তর তীরে, কালুরঘাট ও চরপাথরঘাটা এলাকায়। চট্টগ্রামের কাঠের তৈরি মাছ ধরার নৌকা নিয়ে আজকের ইনসাইড বাংলাদেশ। Millenia-old wooden shipbuilding, boat-making industry of Ctg In the Middle Ages, Chattogram was one of the major hubs for the wooden shipbuilding industry. Ships from Chittagong used to be exported to places like Egypt, Turkey, and Germany even. Towards the end of the 19th century when metal ships started replacing the traditional wooden ships this industry started to disappear. However, the traditional designs of the earlier construction industry can still be seen in the small-scale construction of large sea fishing boats in Chittagong.
