The land cannot bear all his words, for thus has Amos said, 'Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall be exiled from his land.'" And Amaziah said to Amos, "'You seer, go, flee to the land of Judah! There eat bread, and there prophesy. But do not prophesy any more in Bethel, for it is the royal sanctuary and the royal house.'" And Amos answered Amaziah, "I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of prophets; for I am a shepherd and a pruner of sycamore trees. For the Lord took me from tending the flock, and the Lord said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'" Now therefore, hear the word of the Lord! You said, 'Do not prophesy against Israel, nor prophesy against the house of Isaac.' Therefore, thus says the Lord: "Your wife will become a prostitute in the city. Your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. They will divide your land with a line. You will die in an unclean land, and Israel will be exiled from its land.""
