This is their full story: born from Guru Hargobind Sahib's two swords of Miri-Piri and the Khalsa raised by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699; forged in the fire of the 18th-century persecution, when a price was put on every Sikh head and they turned hunger into humour and fear into Chardi Kala; riding at the very tip of the spear of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's army under Akali Phula Singh — the Jathedar of the Akal Takht who summoned even the Maharaja to answer before the Guru's throne — and still riding today, in deep blue, at Hola Mohalla in Anandpur Sahib. The farla, the towering dumalla, the chakkar, "sawa lakh," the jaikara — the spirit that never ran, never surrendered, and never died. Empires rose and turned to dust around them.
