Qazi-Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Jimravi was born in the early 1790s in the village of Gimry. Having received a brilliant religious education from prominent scholars of that time, including Said al-Harakani and Sheikh Muhammad al-Yaraghi, he became one of the main caliphs of the Tariqa. In late 1829, the ulema and elders proclaimed him the first Imam of Dagestan. Realizing the need for active resistance against the expansion of the Russian Empire, he began uniting the highlanders under the banner of Sharia. Serving as a mentor and teacher to the future great Imam Shamil, Qazi-Muhammad conducted numerous daring military campaigns, besieged the Vnezapnaya and Derbent fortresses, and carried out raids that entered history as a symbol of unbending will. On October 29, 1832, during the assault on the village of Gimry, he met a heroic death in an unequal battle, remaining a legend in history. His companion Shamil, who miraculously survived that battle, would soon continue his great path.
