Govorov, overjoyed, calls Tasya and asks her to bring Lilya home and orders a delicious dinner. Tasya and Lilya prepare cabbage soup to Govorov's order. In a conversation with Tasya, Lilya asks if she has a daughter. Govorov enters. Tasya and Govorov are surprised by Lilya's question. Lilya explains that her mother told her about it. Govorov tries to dissuade Lilya. Tasya tells Lilya that she had a daughter whom she loved very much, but she lost her during the war. Govorov decides to ask Tasya her opinion. Shulgin proposes to Tasya. Govorov is in the room, trying to interrupt the conversation. Tasya, to spite Govorov, agrees to the proposal on one condition: on Lilya's 16th birthday, Tasya will tell her daughter the whole truth and only then can she marry Shulgin.
