It is located in the south-eastern part of the Podlaskie Voivodeship, in Hajnówka County, and is the seat of the commune. The Narewka River flows through the town. The village is the seat of the Białowieża commune and the Białowieża National Park, covering 17% of the Polish part of the Białowieża Forest. In Białowieża there are the Białowieża Geobotanical Station, originally of the Polish Academy of Sciences, now of the University of Warsaw, the Institute of Mammal Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the European Center of Natural Forests of the Forest Research Institute.
