A fantastic afternoon session spent at the incredible station of Koblenz in the Rhine Valley where we see plenty of services from DB Regio, Intercity, RRX, National Express Germany, vlexx, VIAS and Trans Regio along with a superb amount of freight from a vast array of different operators. A station first appeared in the town of Koblenz in 1858 when the Rhenish Railway company took over operation of the Bonn-Cologne Railway company, they linked Cologne to Koblenz and the first train to traverse the route was the Windsbraut ( Whirlwind). This was the first of two stations built within close proximity to each other. The second station (Moselle) was built in 1878. In 1890 plans were getting made to knock down the first two stations which were spaced out at 900m apart from one another and create one central rail station that could cope with the demands of the growing city, it was expanding beyond the old city fortifications. The smaller Rhenish station was soon abandoned and the new Central Station was created near to the Moselle Station from 1899 to 1902, the station was officially opened in May 1902, it boasted grand central and side pavilions, the main station building was 96m in length with a hall built over the platforms, the station also had a royal room which would be used by the then Emperor of Germany in 1905 when he visited the station and the town itself. It was a very grand affair. The station remained largely untouched until the end of WW2 when the station and surrounding tracks were damaged by allied air raids, the main hall was lost along with the tower. The rebuild was done by using parts of the original building that was damaged during the war. To this day the station is still being tinkered with, small improvements and modifications are always being made. This was an incredible station to come to and I will happily come back here and spent a full day here as there is always something amazing to be seen.
