The Trail Before the Storm | Overland Adventure in Arkansas

Once a year, overlanders from all across the country gather deep in the Ozark Mountains for one of the biggest events of the year — Rendezvous in the Ozarks. This year, things went a little differently for us. We arrived after dark on Thursday and woke up Friday morning to a busy day ahead. We spent time walking through vendor row, catching up with old friends, and meeting new faces. Storyteller Row was packed with creators, gear, and good conversations. This trip was special for another reason too. Kayla couldn’t make it this time, so I brought our oldest son, Robert, to celebrate his 13th birthday. Watching him take his first hot air balloon ride over the Ozarks was something I’ll never forget. Saturday morning, the weather turned. Storm clouds rolled in, and the event braced for heavy rain. But before it hit, we set out on a quick trail ride with friends—just to see what we could find. The trail was rough, muddy, and challenging, but that’s exactly why we loved it. We made it back just in time before the skies opened up. After the storm cleared, we headed deep into the forest to camp by a quiet river. The night was calm, the fire was warm, and the next morning, the sunrise over the water reminded me why we do this in the first place.
