The Town That Built a Language | Cycling Paarl Berg, South Africa | Ep. 2

I thought 16 miles sounded manageable. I was wrong. This is Paarl, the third-oldest European settlement in South Africa, a town built by Dutch settlers and French Huguenot refugees, and the birthplace of the Afrikaans language. I spent an afternoon riding a loop up Paarl Berg via Jan Phillips Mountain Path, taking in the views, the history, and one fence I definitely wasn't supposed to climb over. In this video I dig into the story of how Paarl got its name, who settled this valley and why, how a collision of languages gave birth to Afrikaans, and why those mountains on the horizon were a wall between the Cape and the rest of the continent, until 1988. This is Part 2 of my return to South Africa after 8 years away. 📍 Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa 🚵 Paarl Berg via Jan Phillips Mountain Path 🗺️ 16 miles | Paarl Berg Loop #southafrica #paarl #exploresouthafrica #afrikaans -------------------------------------- Come find me on Instagram: ↳   / onthefritzadventure   -------------------------------------- 🚲 If you’d like to support the channel and future adventures, you can do so here on my PayPal ❤️ ↳ https://dub.sh/FritzHall -------------------------------------- 🛠️ Gear I Use ↳ Bike-1 : https://dub.sh/600ADX ↳ Bike Computer : https://dub.sh/garmin-edge-1040 ↳ Action Camera : https://dub.sh/dji-osmo-action4 ↳ iPhone : https://dub.sh/iphone15promax ↳ Drone : https://dub.sh/dji-air-3s ↳ Water Bottles : https://dub.sh/bivo-bottles ↳ Drink Mix : https://dub.sh/LMNT 👉 More gear recommendations coming soon via my Amazon Storefront! -------------------------------------- 🎚️ What I Use For Music: ↳ Music provided by Artlist.io : https://dub.sh/Artlist.io -------------------------------------- 📑 Disclaimer: This video is NOT sponsored.
