Stay In My Corner - Dells - 1968 Version and 1981 Version
The Dells formed in Chicago in 1954 and reached the charts with the original version of Oh, What A Nite. They were still on the charts in the 1990's with, A Heart Is A House For Love, an original song recorded for the movie about their career, The Five Heartbeats. Stay In My Corner, had originally been released in 1964 and when in 1968, they were trying to fill an album of material, they decided to re-work Stay In My Corner, adding strings and the extended version they did in their live act. At 6 minutes long, it was a risk to release it as a single at a time when radio play dictated under three minute running times. Needless to say, it went to #1 in August of 1968 and paved the way for time constrictions to fall by the wayside. I've included their 1981 remake of this classic song. Check out the spectacular note that Marvin Junior holds at the 11:09 mark to 11:40. No one else has the power that Marvin Junior had. 30 seconds of sheer brilliance!
