Lost in Time: MS Subbulakshmi’s Electrifying 1956 Performance at the Music Academy, Madras!
As the sun sets early during the December winter, around 5:30 PM, the city of Madras glows with a quiet amber light. That year, 1956, marked a turning point: The Music Academy’s December Season had moved from the PS High School grounds to its own land on Mowbrays Road, a dream realized through a historic fundraiser led by none other than MS Subbulakshmi herself. The newly erected pandal shimmered under soft incandescent lights. The air was thick with jasmine and quiet anticipation. On one side sat rows of women draped in jewel toned Kanjivaram silks, their blue jagger diamonds glinting against antique heirloom gold. Across the aisle, men in pristine white veshtis sat still, stunned into silence by the icon they were about to witness. With a graceful bow, MS Subbulakshmi entered the stage. She greeted the audience with folded hands, her smile serene yet full of power. What followed wasn’t just a concert it was history unfolding. She didn’t sing, but the music seemed to sing through her. Pantuvarali, Mukhari, Thodi — each raga spilled forth, luminous and alive. And then, as though summoned by destiny, came the inevitable: Shankarabharanam, a raga she could never part from, expansive and glistening in her hands. This was an ode to Meenakshi, a radiant invocation of her beloved Madurai. As the evening deepened, the mood shifted. She started with a meditative Bhairavi alapana, slow and smouldering. It soared into a majestic tanam, culminating in a spellbinding pallavi: "Amba Madura Meenakshi” yet another tribute wrapped in reverence, to the goddess and the city she called home. The post-pallavi section was sheer brilliance. She sang Kshetrayya’s "Payyada", a composition she learnt from T Brinda, and reimagined in a way that was unmistakably her own. With brika-laced sangatis that soared but never overpowered, she kept its tender soul intact. What more could one ask for, with a voice like hers? We are honoured to bring you this enchanted evening, a night when time stood still. This historic concert has been digitised directly from the original master spool, ensuring that the nuance of the performance are faithfully preserved. Despite the passage of decades, the audio retains remarkable clarity, offering you a pristine and immersive listening experience, just as it was heard in 1956.
