Every time I wanted to go out with my friends or simply have a moment to myself, he would give me that puppy-dog face that ended up ruining my day. I felt like I was trapped in a glass cage where every move I made was interpreted as a threat to his fragile emotional stability. It was truly exhausting having to explain my every thought so he wouldn't feel left out. When I planned my solo trip to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, he became simply unbearable and showed his true colors. I just wanted some fresh air, to meet new people, and to reconnect with myself away from his constant surveillance. His complaints seemed utterly immature, almost childish, and only reinforced my feeling that I needed to get away. It infuriated me that he couldn't be happy for me and that he saw my zest for life as a personal affront to him. The day I finally arrived at the airport, the scent of my coconut sunscreen was the only thing that brought me peace amidst the storm of messages he was sending me. My phone was buzzing nonstop with texts full of drama, doubts, and questions about what time I was arriving or who I'd be talking to on the plane.
