What does Kyuchul Ahn think “art” is? Kyuchul Ahn strives to minimize the gap between art and life by creating works with familiar objects and motifs that anyone can relate to, with a strong emphasis on humanism. Constantly questioning the relationship between art and life, Ahn often uses his works to contemplate fleeting moments that tend to be overlooked or ignored. Some of his representative works include Writing by 1,000 People, which collected transcripts from the artist and his audience in a single book; LIFE, in which he juxtaposed the terms “life art = life” and “life – art = life”; and Two Bicycles, in which two bicycles were connected, thus losing their function. In this interview, Kyuchul Ahn explains his own definition of art, as well as his attitude towards art, life, and the world.
