Quando o Paciente "É" a Doença: Self Conceptualizado vs Self Observador (Live Comentada)
Live commentary on Chapter 5 of the book "Learning Process-Based Therapy" (Hofmann, Hayes & Lorscheid, 2021). In this Part 1, I focus on the Self dimension: the difference between conceptualized self (when the patient "IS" the illness, "IS" the trauma) and observing self (the ability to look at one's own experience from the outside), and the role of self-efficacy as the most powerful mediator of clinical change. In this live session, I discussed the self dimension in process-based therapy, explaining how the story a person learns to tell about themselves can become a kind of psychological prison. I used the case of Julie, who wanted to go to a conference but froze in the face of her husband's disapproval, to show how difficulty in asserting oneself, guilt, fear of disappointing, and the need for approval can feed off each other. I also talked about conceptualized self, rigid identity rules, avoidance, and psychological flexibility, especially when a person begins to live based on ideas like "I can't be selfish," "I need to please," or "I can't disappoint anyone." Finally, I introduced the centrality of the event, showing how significant or repeated experiences can cease to be merely something that happened and begin to define who the person believes themselves to be. ⏱️ Chapters: 0:00 - Introduction 3:20 - Self in the Clinic 6:42 - Julie's Clinical Case 8:00 - Conversation as a Threat 12:34 - Avoidance and Positioning 16:37 - Identity Stories 20:44 - Childhood and Family Rules 26:23 - Conceptualized Self 28:11 - Rule of Selfishness 34:00 - Psychological Flexibility 36:43 - Function of the Rigid Self 44:47 - Centrality of the Event ▶️ Want organized summaries of these live sessions — along with the complete CBT, from foundation to advanced clinical practice?
