"1980s Dark Fantasy" But It's Real Movies Instead of AI Slop [4K] [NO AI]
All clips identified in the closed captions Back in 2024 I got tired of scrolling past an endless sea of "1980s dark fantasy" AI videos, and I've been working on this supercut on and off ever since. AI slop might be winning for now, but I still think it's worthwhile to highlight the actual movies that have contributed to this trendy but vague aesthetic. The songs featured are a semi-butchered "Slowed and Reverbed" version of "Hide" by Dorian Concept (as featured in countless AI videos) followed by the superior original "Hide (CS01 Version)". The last song is Ballpoint by Divine Frequency. FAQs and Further Reading: Q: Is "Dark Fantasy" a real film genre? A: Yes and no. In film, it's primarily a retronym used to describe a specific aesthetic niche more than an actual genre. There are a few movies that accurately fall into the dark fantasy genre (ex: Excalibur, Legend, Dark Crystal), but there are far more specific examples in literature where the term originated. Q: Do all of the movies featured in the video fall under this vague Dark Fantasy category? A: No, but they all contain at least a few shots that I feel fit under the broad idea of Dark Fantasy as it's used now. It's mostly vibes. I also used footage from a lot of swords and sandals movies in addition to more typical fantasy films. Q: Would you recommend all of these movies? A: Most of them are enjoyable, some of them are quite bad, but even a bad movie will always be better than AI slop. Q: What exactly is "AI slop"? A: Wikipedia sums it up perfectly: "AI slop is digital content made with generative artificial intelligence that is perceived as lacking in effort, quality, or meaning, and produced in high volume as clickbait to gain advantage in the attention economy, or earn money." [1]. Q: Why is AI slop bad? A: AI content is overcrowding social media and video-sharing platforms like YouTube. With screen-time now common for a large percentage of children as young as 2 years old, this means that there is now AI content targeting children of all ages [2]. Studies have already shown that AI slop is bad for babies, bad for children [3], and bad for learning [4]. If you have a fully developed brain, bad taste, and you still want to watch an endless stream of AI garbage, then go ahead! Nobody's stopping you. But we haven't even gotten into the ethics of generative AI stealing from artists and breaking copyright law. Q: I've heard that gen AI steals from artists and breaks copyright law. Is that true? A: Yes! All of the major AI models were trained on incredibly large datasets that illegally obtained copyrighted works such as movies, books, articles, and art. The tech companies didn't ask for permission or pay for licenses before doing this, they just did it in the hopes that their technology would become too embedded in the economy by the time the lawsuits inevitably came. Several of them (like Meta) simply illegally pirated media at a large scale via BitTorrent to obtain the data to train their models. In May 2025 the U.S. Copyright Office concluded that "making commercial use of vast troves of copyrighted works to produce expressive content that competes with them in existing markets, especially where this is accomplished through illegal access, goes beyond established fair use boundaries" [5]. The Trump administration fired the head of the U.S. Copyright Office the next day. Now imagine how this has also affected all of the freelance artists, illustrators, and designers whose work was also scraped along with all of the Hollywood IP. Q: How about AI in general? Is it bad for us? A: Studies show that regularly using AI for simple tasks is bad for our critical thinking [6], especially for anyone with a developing brain [7]. And that's before we consider other issues of AI like rising energy costs, the environmental impact of data centers [8], and the corrosion of the human spirit after long-term exposure to "art" created by a soulless algorithm [9].
