Fraughan Picking and Mountain/Fraughan Sunday - Remembered in Song and Story
Tomorrow is Fraughan (Frocken) Sunday and this morning I caught up with Pat Brennan and recorded him tell me all about the tradition of Mountain/Fraughan Sunday which took place in the Blackstairs above the villages of Killanne and Rathnure here in Co. Wexford. I recorded a lovely chat with Pat however when we finished we called to the the nearby graveyard in Killanne and didn't we meet another local man Chris Forrestal who now lives in Kilkenny. I was in the process of taking the camera out of the car to record Pat when the two men started to talk about the tradition. No time to mic both up, I quickly threw on an directional mic and recorded this conversation. Its not polished in any shape of form but it captures the natural chat between the two men. It starts with the two men remembering a song and then Chris gives us a few lines of a song hes working about Fraughan Sunday. As he say it's only just a working draft so don’t go learning it until its finished. Great material here and if you have 8 minutes, have a listen. Ends with the bit of me nearly tripping over the tripod that I'd taken out of the car. Enjoy.
