The piece was written for his father, Franz Strauss (1822-1905), who was a member of the Munich Court Opera and a renowned horn virtuoso. Originally intended as the slow movement for a sonata that Strauss ultimately never completed, the work remained unpublished for nearly a century until it was finally released in 1973. Because of its moderate difficulty, the piece is now frequently utilized for teaching purposes and remains a respected, lyrical addition to the Romantic horn repertoire.
