Even in the 1950s, Karagümrük was a mystical district known as a "place of the afterlife," home to some of Istanbul's most important dervish lodges and sacred places of worship. In this episode, Professor İlber Ortaylı's unique narrative explores the story of how the Veysel Karani lineage was brought to Istanbul in the 17th century by order of Sultan Ahmed I, and the place of this family, who for centuries held the keys to the Holy Mantle, in state policy. The episode also details the elegant architecture of the Holy Mantle Mosque, adorned with inscriptions personally drawn by Sultan Abdülmecid; the influence of Mimar Sinan's military training, spanning from the Egyptian pyramids to Baalbek, on his genius; and the drama of Gazi (Kara) Ahmet Pasha, unjustly executed amidst the rivalry between Hürrem Sultan and Rüstem Pasha.
