Lochbuie Isle of Mull Scotland So much to see in a small remote place

Overlooked by the spectacular mountain Ben Buie, a stunning beach with a herd of highland coos, a castle, tidal islands and the only stone circle on Mull sit within a short distance of each other. And of course there is Loch Buie, the sea loch from which the village gets its name, with views out to Colonsay, Oronsay, Islay and Jura. This all makes for a very full and enjoyable day out. The village has an intriguingly shaped war memorial, a beautiful church and The Old Post Office shop and café, where there are toilet facilities. We received a friendly welcome, good coffee and decent food there. For us, the main attraction was Laggan Sands with its herd of highland coos which frequently graze / rest there. We were conscious not to disturb them and kept a respecful distance away. Moy Castle was built some time between 1360 when the Macleans were granted the land from the Lord of the Isles and its first recording in a royal Charter in 1494. Captured by the Campbells for a period, it was returned to the Macleans, but was abandoned in 1752 when a new house was built. It is really well preserved from the outside, however, the interior was sadly closed, considered dangerous, when we visited. The tidal islands Eilean Mor and Eilean Mor 2 were accessible at the time we visited, so we could walk across to them, but they are cut off at high tide, so it is important to check the tides before visiting. The smaller island to the rear of Eilean Mor has a cairn erected by the Corbetts in honour of the coronation and Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The weather had started to turn by the time I was walking over to Lochbuie Stone Circle. There is a small car park by the entrance to the field and the visitor can follow a trail of white stones to the Stone Circle across a very boggy field, which has some crossing aids placed in certain areas. The stone circle is impressive, you pass a large monolith outside the circle before arriving at a very complete looking circle. These stones are smaller, but the circle is clear. A smaller stone just outside the circle, I took to mark the entrance as it seems to be near the largest gap between the stones. Walking into the circle, you are looking directly at Ben Buie, the tallest mountain in the area, another reason to believe that may be the entrance. Many of these monuments are thought to be ceremonial places to honour the ancestors who may either be buried high on Ben Buie, or their spirits thought to be looking down on the living from on high, in this case the top of the mountain. I hope you enjoy the video.
