The Tragedy Of A Country That Can’t Catch A Break | Ft Tut Kuany Kok

In this conversation, we speak with Tut Kuany Kok, a South Sudanese writer and survivor of war, about the history of Sudan and South Sudan, including colonial rule under the Ottoman Empire and Britain, the First and Second Sudanese Civil Wars, the South Sudan civil war that started in 2013, and the ongoing conflict in Darfur. He also shares his personal journey of fleeing war to Kenya, living in exile, and later returning to South Sudan on a visit after a decade of being away. We discuss his books Suffering Without Bitterness and Bigoah, which explore themes like forced marriage. Did the war inspire his writing muse? The conversation also covers South Sudanese culture, politics, economy, language, religion, and the legacy of John Garang. Finally, we reflect on whether South Sudan can achieve lasting peace, stability, and development after decades of war. #conversationsinliterature #southsudan #war #aljazeera #salvakiir #sudanwar #southsudanesesongs #southsudanese #southsudannews #southsudancomedy Show: Conversations in Literature Host: Miyamoto Muswahili Production: Roaring Simba Network Sponsor: Nairobi Academic Press 0:00 Intro 1:33 Breakout of civil war in South Sudan in 2013, and escape to Kenya 4:55 Conquest of Sudan by Ottoman Empire and Britain 17:22 After independence of Sudan from Britain, First Sudanese Civil War 20:44 Second Sudanese Civil War 22:48 John Garang's vision 28:25 Breakout of the South Sudanese Civil War from 2013 37:49 The war in Darfur, Sudan 44:16 Becoming a writer, first book "Suffering Without Bitterness" 46:58 Going back to South Sudan for the first time in ten years 48:48 Q&A on South Sudan - food, culture, sports, commerce, brands, TV, accents, economy, internet, comedy scene, stereotypes 59:00 Will South Sudan get to the promised land? 1:04:39 Literary culture of South Sudan 1:08:2 Q&A - music, football, banks, tourism, private sector, entrepreneurship 1:14:32 Second book "Bigoah" is about forced marriage 1:1:12 Christianity in South Sudan, Luo of South Sudan, his Nuer community 1:18:52 His books 1:21:15 Summary of the conversation, the future of South Sudan, relationship of South Sudan and Kenya 1:30:54 The end
