The Power of the Lens – Focal Length in Visual Storytelling – Masterclass & Reference Guide
Lenses are the eye of the audience… the window to the world that the filmmakers opens. How someone experiences a film is a lot about where is the camera is placed and what focal length is used. In this episode we are going to explore how to use the “Power of the Lens” for visual storytelling. Most of us grab a focal length instinctively… but deconstructing that can give as a deeper, more sophisticated understanding, improving our ability to create captivating art. Veteran Hollywood DoP and former president of the ASC Kees van Ostrum will help us with that task, and who could possible have better insights in that subject than a DoP that was also the President of Cooke Optics. Together we will break down a simple question: When do you grab what focal length from your arsenal… and why. To help your process and planning, we created a reference guide on how a focal length looks.. from 14mm – 180mm look at various distances, speeds, and movements. This will explain the effect of distance, magnification and emotion. DZOfilm was so kind to sponsor this episode by loaning us a full set of Arles Cine Primes. Of course we will include a full test of these beautiful lenses. Let’s put the power of lens in your arsenal!
