In India, the “caste system” was officially abolished long ago on paper by law. But the truth is—deep within society—it never really disappeared. Every time I walk through the alleys, the markets, and the narrow streets, I still see traces of division everywhere. A group of people is pushed into jobs no one else would ever choose, branded as if they were simply “born in the wrong place,” even though they are just as human as you and me. When I stand there watching, a question keeps echoing in my head: What does it feel like to wake up each day carrying hardship on your back? To work for just a few rupees, to pour out every drop of strength just to survive in a city that never stops moving. Is “endurance” really enough? Or do they have to do much more—accept pain, grit their teeth, force themselves to adapt—until even imagining it feels unbearable to me. And no matter how much I think about it, there’s no way I can truly understand how they feel. Because this isn’t a story from a book, or something passed down by word of mouth—it’s their real life, the air they breathe every single day. That’s why I chose not to just stand and watch. I tried stepping into their world—eating what they eat, working how they work, living the way they must live—to learn for myself what it really means to be seen as “lower caste” in India.
