Skunk Inspection Under Deck – Wildlife Assessment (Kitchener)

A comprehensive wildlife inspection was performed at this Kitchener property after the homeowner reported skunk activity beneath the deck. During the inspection, multiple wildlife concerns were identified, including active skunk entry points, rodent access, damaged exclusion attempts, and structural vulnerabilities around both the deck and shed. The primary skunk den was located beneath the deck, where heavy digging and excavation confirmed repeated use by a larger animal. Additional wildlife evidence included smaller entry points likely used by squirrels, chipmunks, or rodents, along with chewing damage, claw marks, and extensive tunneling around the structure. The inspection also identified gaps around utility penetrations that could allow mice and rats to enter the building. A previous attempt to prevent wildlife entry using chicken wire had failed, with skunks successfully tearing through the material and continuing to burrow underneath the shed. The inspection concluded that localized repairs would not provide a long-term solution. Instead, a full perimeter exclusion involving trenching, galvanized steel wildlife mesh, one way doors, and below-grade protection was recommended to prevent skunks from simply relocating to another section of the structure.
