Man arrested in South Africa over Great Denham murders
An international manhunt has ended with the arrest of a Bedford man in South Africa on suspicion of murdering his wife and two young daughters. The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit launched a triple murder investigation on Tuesday (7 July) after officers discovered three bodies at a property in Great Denham. South African police detained Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, 45, today (Friday) in connection with the tragic deaths. The victims have been identified as his wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, 42, known locally as Zandile, and their daughters Natalie, 15, and Nala, five. Detectives believe that Tshuma left the UK on Saturday (4 July), travelled to Zimbabwe, and then crossed the border into South Africa. Return to UK South African authorities have remanded Tshuma in custody while international law enforcement agencies work to return him to the UK. The Crown Prosecution Service has already authorised three counts of murder against the suspect following a swift review of the evidence. The senior investigating officer, detective inspector Lee Martin, praised the international cooperation that led to the rapid arrest. "This has been a fast-moving investigation which has involved multiple law enforcement partners, including the National Crime Agency, Interpol and authorities in both Zimbabwe and South Africa," he said. Adding, "Thanks to the tireless work and dedication of all those involved, we have managed to swiftly locate and arrest Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, who we want to speak to in connection with this shocking and tragic case. "Our investigation remains ongoing and we’ll be working closely with our counterparts in South Africa, as well as the National Crime Agency and the Crown Prosecution Service, to bring him back to this country. "Our thoughts remain very much with Zandile, Natalie and Nala, as well as their loved ones, at this time." Legal restrictions Strict legal restrictions are now active across the UK, meaning residents must not share any online comments that could compromise a fair trial. The chief crown prosecutor, Emma Davies, confirmed that formal charges are now in place. Davies said: "The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised three charges of murder against Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma following the deaths of his wife and two daughters. "This comes after the careful review of evidence provided by Bedfordshire Police. "Our thoughts remain with Zandile, Natalie and Nala’s loved ones and with everyone affected by what has happened." Davies warned: "As criminal proceedings are active, nothing should be reported, commented on or shared online that could prejudice the defendant’s right to a fair trial." Local officers and international partners will continue to collaborate closely as the extradition process moves forward.
