He was one of the last to surrender north of Stalingrad. He resisted until the last moment. General Maximilian von Seydlitz-Kurzbach Commander of the 51st Corps of the 6th Army. From the very beginning of the encirclement, he pressured Paulus: "We must retreat, otherwise we will all be massacred."
