1970s FFS (Front Freewheel System) - Ahead of its time or a Relic that belongs in the past?

I recently took a look at a vintage 1978 Schwinn Suburban bike. It is equipped with a very unique freewheel system that is part of the crank assembly. Called the FFS, the Front Freewheel System is designed to allow shifting without having to pedal for the gear changes to take effect. Very unique and it some ways possibly superior. Did they have it right in the 1970s or is this a relic that belongs in the past? Learn more about the FFS here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_f... What do you think about the FFS?
