The Russian Economy Is Failing — and Russians Are More Afraid Than They Admit
Hi, I'm Mark Biernat, an economist. Something has changed in Russia — and it's not in the data. It's in how people talk. For years, Russians online argued about their economy in complex ways: sanctions, demographics, oil dependence, inflation, military spending, and the long-term trajectory. There was nuance. Debate. Contradiction. Now, increasingly, the answer collapses to a single phrase: "Everything is fine." In this video, I ask whether the Kremlin has moved past censorship into something deeper — a cognitive reshaping of the collective unconscious. As Ukrainian drone strikes reach further into Russian territory, Crimea grows less secure, oil infrastructure burns, sanctions slowly erode industrial capacity, and inflation squeezes ordinary households, the public narrative seems to grow more psychologically defensive and more simplified. My argument: The shift toward repetitive certainty may itself be evidence of rising fear. Real economic stress is building beneath the surface: food inflation, high interest rates, VAT increases, depletion of sovereign wealth reserves, declining purchasing power, and deepening dependence on the war economy. Ukraine's adaptive, decentralized innovation increasingly contrasts with Russia's rigid, monolithic structure. Drawing on Adam Smith's division of labor and the logic of adaptive systems, I examine why flexible innovation tends to outperform centralized command over time. The question is not whether collapse comes tomorrow. The question is whether a society can still honestly perceive reality while under prolonged stress. #Russia #Ukraine #RussianEconomy #Sanctions #Geopolitics #Crimea #OilPrices #Inflation #Economics #UkraineWar #Putin #AdamSmith #RussiaSanctions #WarEconomy #Russia #Ukraine #RussianEconomy #Sanctions #Geopolitics #Crimea #OilPrices #Inflation #Economics #UkraineWar #Putin #AdamSmith #CognitiveWarfare #CollectiveUnconscious
