Sarah Ashton-Cirillo is an American former journalist, political operative, activist, and Ukrainian military veteran who became one of the most internationally visible foreign voices supporting Ukraine after Russia’s full-scale invasion. She travelled to Ukraine in March 2022 intending to report on the refugee crisis, drawing on earlier work around the Syrian and Afghan refugee crises, but quickly moved from Poland and western Ukraine to Kharkiv, where she remained for months while the city and surrounding oblast were under heavy Russian attack.
