Welcome to the Biology Concept channel. The life cycle of Cycas exhibits a haplodiplontic alternation of generations, dominated by a diploid sporophyte. The sporophyte is a perennial, palm-like plant that produces separate male and female reproductive structures (dioecious nature). Male cones bear microsporangia that produce microspores, which develop into male gametophytes (pollen grains). Female megasporophylls bear ovules where megaspores develop into female gametophytes. Pollination in Cycas occurs mainly by wind or insects, and the pollen tube functions as a haustorial structure rather than directly delivering sperm. Fertilization is unique because Cycas produces large, multiciliated motile sperm, a primitive gymnosperm feature. After fertilization, the zygote develops into an embryo, which matures into a seed. Upon germination, the seed gives rise to a new sporophytic plant, completing the life cycle.
