Open Letter: Electric Cars Not So Environmentally Friendly After All? Battery News - Battery Researchers Comment on Headlines Subscribe to the Geladen #Podcast: https://www.geladen-podcast.de/ Prof. Dr. Thomas Koch, Head of the Institute of Reciprocating Engines at KIT, caused quite a stir when he and his colleagues wrote an open letter to the EU Commission. The letter revealed an alleged universal calculation error, according to which the real CO2 emissions of electric cars are twice as high as previously assumed. In his open letter, Koch, an expert on combustion engines, refers to a recently published article entitled "The Averaging Bias - A Standard Miscalculation, which extensively underestimates Real CO2 Emissions." According to him, more than 170 scientists support the findings of this article. His argument: Politicians have so far (very broadly) assumed that electricity will become increasingly cleaner through the expansion of wind and solar power plants. But Koch and his colleagues see things differently: Electricity demand will continue to rise as more electric cars hit the road. And then the calculations for CO2 emissions will no longer add up. According to Koch, actual CO2 emissions could be much higher than estimated by politicians – even twice as high in total. The scientists around Koch are quoted as saying: According to the "correct" calculation, a VW ID.3 would actually "cause" 30 tons of CO2 during its "life cycle" (15 years, 220,000 km) through the power grid instead of 14 tons. The climate balance of a diesel full hybrid, on the other hand (67% fossil fuel, 33% biofuel), is even better.
