Are scientific names better than common names?

If you are part of any online plant community, no doubt you would have seen ID requests, or posted your own. Most of the time the more knowledgeable people in the group would respond with the common name or maybe even the scientific name. In the context of succulents, the name "Hens and Chicks" is passed around a lot, referring to a whole range of plants. For the most part people mean the Sempervivum genus when they say "Hens and Chicks", but that name has also been applied to any clumping variety in other genera. Using scientific names allows you to cut through the ambiguity, but at the cost of usability and convenience. Not everyone is familiar with these names. So it depends on the context of their use. In this video we discuss that and more.
