നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള വെട്ടുകാട് പള്ളി തിരുവനന്തപുരം അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വിമാനത്താവളത്തിന് രണ്ടര കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്തായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ക്രൈസ്തവ ദേവാലയമാണ്‌ വെട്ടുകാട് പള്ളി (മാദ്രെ ദെ ദേവൂസ്, ദേവാലയം). തിരുവനന്തപുരം ലത്തീൻ അതിരൂപതയിലെ പ്രധാന തീർത്ഥാടനകേന്ദ്രമാണ് വെട്ടുകാട്. ഭരതത്തിന്റെ രണ്ടാം അപ്പോസ്തലൻ എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന വിശുദ്ധ ഫ്രാൻസിസ് സേവ്യറിന്റെ പാദസ്പർശനത്താൽ അനുഗൃഹീതമായ പുണ്യഭൂമിയാണ് വെട്ടുകാടെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പോർച്ചുഗീസ് മിഷണറിമാരുടെ വരവിന് മുൻപു തന്നെ, വെട്ടുകാട്ടിൽ ഒരു ജപാലയം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതായും ഒരു ക്രൈസ്തവ സമൂഹം ഇവിടെ നിലനിന്നിരുന്നതായും പാരമ്പര്യ വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. 'മാദ്രെ' എന്ന ഇറ്റാലിയൻ പദത്തിന്റെയും 'ദെ ദേവൂസ്' എന്ന പോർച്ചുഗീസ് പദങ്ങളുടെയും സമ്മിശ്ര രൂപമായ 'മാദ്രെ ദെ ദേവൂസ്' എന്ന നാമമാണ് ദേവാലയത്തിന് നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. 'ദൈവത്തിന്റെ അമ്മ' എന്നാണ് ഈ പദങ്ങളുടെ അർത്ഥം. കന്യകാമറിയത്തിന്റെ നാമത്തിലാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ ദേവാലയം സ്ഥാപിതമായിരിക്കുന്നത്. ക്രിസ്തുരാജത്വ തിരുനാൾ 1942-ലാണ് ക്രിസ്തുരജന്റെ തിരുസ്വരൂപം ഇവിടെ സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നത്. ഇടവകാംഗമായ റവ.ഫാ.സി.എം.ഹിലാരിയുടെ പൗരോഹിത്യ സ്വീകരണത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മയ്ക്കായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കളാണ് ക്രിസ്തുരാജ സ്വരൂപം ഇടവകയ്ക്ക് സമർപ്പിച്ചത്. ആദ്യം ദേവാലയത്തിനകത്തായിരുന്ന തിരുസ്വരൂപം രണ്ടു വർ‍ഷത്തിനു ശേഷം അന്നത്തെ കൊച്ചി മെത്രാനായിരുന്ന റവ.ഡോ.ജോസ് അൽവെർനസ് ആണ് ഇപ്പോൾ തിരുസ്വരൂപം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത്, വെഞ്ചരിച്ച് പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയത്. എല്ലാ വർഷവും ലത്തീൻ ആരാധന ക്രമവർഷത്തിലെ അവസന ഞായറഴ്ചയാണ് ക്രിസ്തരാജന്റെ രാജത്വത്തിരുനാൾ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്. ഇന്ന് കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ തീർത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രമായാണ് വെട്ടുകാട് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. പത്തുദിവസം നീണ്ടുനില്ക്കുന്ന ഈ ഉത്സവം വളരെ വിപുലമായും ആഘോഷമായുമാണ് കൊണ്ടാടുന്നത്. കേരളത്തിന്റെ നാനാഭഗത്തുനിന്നും ജാതി മത ഭേതമന്യേ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് തീർത്ഥാടകർ‍ അന്നേ ദിവസം ഇവിടെ എത്താറുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ എല്ലാ വെള്ളീയഴ്ചയും അനവധി പേർ ക്രിസ്തുരജന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം തേടി എത്തുന്നുമുണ്ട്. ക്രിസ്തുരാജ പാദപൂജ 1980-ൽ അന്നത്തെ ഇടവക വികാരിയായിരുന്ന ഫാദർ സ്റ്റീഫൻ ആണ് ഇവിടെ പാദപൂജ ആരംഭിച്ചത്. എല്ലാ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചയും ക്രിസ്തുരാജ സന്നിധിയിൽ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന പാദപൂജയിൽ ജാതി മത ഭേതമന്യേ നിരവധി തീർത്ഥാടകർ സംബന്ധിക്കാറുണ്ട്. Mother of God Church, Vettukad The Madre de Deus Church, also known as the Mother of God Church ("mother of God" in Portuguese/Latin), is a church located in Vettukad in Kerala, India's Thiruvananthapuram district. The current church building was constructed in 1934 and finished in 1937 and has since grown into a small township with a Christian population of 6,770. There is evidence that Christians have existed in Vettukad since the 15th century. Madre de Deus is known for its Feast of Christ the King celebration, which it has been celebrating for more than 500 years. Organisations such as the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM), Legion of Mary, Sodality, Vincent de Paul, and TSSS actively work with the church. History St. Francis Xavier is thought to have visited Vettukad sometime between 1543 and 1547 to evangelise the region but found a population of Christians already there. In 1568, Madre De Deus had a parish of 175. The current church was built under Rev. Fr. Godwin A. Gudinho in 1934 and completed under Rev. Fr. Michael John in 1937. It was subsequently blessed by Monsinjor Leon De Souza, Vicar General of the Cochin Diocese, and grew with the help of St. Antony’s Forane Church and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Trivandrum. A new cemetery vault was added to the parish in 2008, increasing the capacity by more than 100. The Feast of Christ the King takes place over ten days, starting on the last Sunday of the liturgical year corresponding to the third Sunday of November every year.[clarification needed] The celebration includes a number of religious rites, following by a grand procession on the penultimate day. A feast, as well as a high mass led by the Archbishop of Trivandrum Archdiocese and other religious rituals, take place on the final day. Overseas parishioners, such as those in the UAE (at St. Michael's Church) and the United Kingdom, celebrate the festival from abroad. One of the amazing facets of Kerala's socio-cultural fabric is the presence of a large number of places of worship. Kerala has embraced many different faiths and the best example of this can be seen in the perfect harmony of religions and places of worship that adorn the land. The capital city of Thiruvananthapuram leads from the front when it comes to this aspect. One of the classic examples of this is the Vettukad Church, a Christian church that is visited by people from different faiths and all walks of life. Also known as Madre De Deus Church meaning ‘Mother of God Church’, the Vettukad church is believed to be over 500 years old. Famed for the ‘Feast of the King’ celebration, the church is believed to have been visited by St. Francis Xavier between C.E. 1543 and 1547. The celebration is a unique event with special prayer offerings in the church. There is a celebratory procession carrying the statue of the Christ the King on the main day of the festival. The church and the surroundings are attractively decorated on the festival days.
