The first trains were put into service in 2008. The trains reach a top speed of 140 km/h and have magnetic track brakes. The trains run solo or coupled with another 422 train. The class 422 trains are used in the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network (Dusseldorf and Ruhr area). A total of 48 trains were sold to the transport association Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) for lines S1 and S4 and were redesigned (conversion between 2017 and 2019). The new owner makes these trains available to the operator (DB Regio).
