The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) invited us on a private tour to explore one of the most impressive engineering feats in the state and we’re taking you with us! Completed in 1951, Bull Shoals Dam was built on the White River as part of a massive flood control and hydroelectric power project. At over 2,200 feet long and 256 feet high, it’s one of the largest concrete dams in the United States east of the Rockies. The structure created Bull Shoals Lake, a 45,000-acre reservoir with nearly 1,000 miles of shoreline (a favorite for boaters, anglers, and vacationers). In this video, we go inside the dam to see the inner workings that generate clean hydroelectric power and help manage flood risk throughout the White River Basin. We’ll also share how Bull Shoals Dam contributes to recreation, wildlife habitat, and the local economy.
