In China, the expression kungfu characterizes any style of martial art, or task done with perfection, not just martial arts.[1][2] There is also another term widely used in China: Kuoshu (pinyin: Guoshu) - meaning "national art" - imposed by the Chinese government to designate the martial art (Wushu) in a more nationalistic way.[3] Shaolin Quan There are over 400 different styles of Kungfu/Wushu/Kuoshu cataloged in China, which can be classified into two schools: Waijia, or external school, and Neijia, or internal school. The first includes most Kungfu styles: some originating from the Shaolin Temple; others originating from other temples - such as those on Mount Emei, Fukien, and the Huangshan Mountains. The Waijia school prioritizes practice aimed at external development, that is, physical or martial development. It includes the so-called "hard" Kungfu styles. Most external styles fit into the main style: tongbeiquan, based on the movements of animals such as the tiger, the praying mantis, the monkey, the snake, and the crane. Other examples of external Kung Fu styles are Sanshou - or Sanda or Chinese boxing - and Shuai jiao, geared towards combat. Neijia, on the other hand, aims at internal development, or Chi, encompassing the so-called "soft" styles. The internal school became better known from the Wudang temple, a center that emphasized traditional styles. Some of these styles have become considerably famous in the West, such as Baguazhang, Xingyiquan, and Taijiquan. A modern reformulation with a high-performance sporting purpose is modern kung fu, which often requires very well-prepared athletes. In parallel, traditional kung fu, which has many more practitioners, offers sporting and martial practice for all ages. SOURCE: FREE WIKIPEDIA In ancient China, each village had its own fighting method. Generally, the teacher was a retired army officer or an adventurer who had traveled extensively. This teacher would pass on to his students the techniques and teachings they had learned from their master and life experience. This method was usually called "Village Kung Fu," as it was, in most villages, the only one taught. Over time, we see a great development of techniques that transform into a system or style of Kung Fu. How is a style named? The style can be named according to the family that created it. Hung Gar is so called because it is the Kung Fu of the Hung family. Or by the technical principle that underlies it. As is the case with the Xingyi or Hsing-I style, whose name means "intention and form" or "mind and form." Thus, the idea of this style is the combined work of mental intention with physical form. Other styles are named after the animal that inspired their techniques, such as the Praying Mantis style, whose technique is inspired by the hunting method of this insect. Systems can also be named after the place where they were developed, such as Emei Boxing, which was created in the Emei mountain region. How is a style created? Since ancestry is fundamental in Chinese culture, we almost always find a narrative that tells how a Kung Fu style was created. It can often be quite fantastical, resembling a legend more than a story based on facts. The narrative about the fighting system was important not only to know about the source of knowledge, but also to explain the fundamentals of the style in a simplified way. In the legend about the Praying Mantis style, for example, we have a tale about a martial artist who sees a praying mantis fighting a cicada. True or not, this story explains that the practitioner has to imitate the insect, attacking quickly and fiercely. Besides a "legend" of creation, there is also a lineage of masters who have kept the technique alive. This is the genealogical tree of a style. Often it branches out, creating variations of the same style. For example, the Praying Mantis style has several branches, such as Seven Stars, Plum Blossom, and Taiji. How are Kung Fu styles classified? There are more than 300 styles officially recognized by the community of Kung Fu masters and practitioners. With so many, it is common to hear about various categories that separate the various systems. They attempt to make it easier to encompass the wide range of Chinese martial techniques.
