After Losing Everything, A Pregnant Woman Applied For A Job — The Mafia Boss’s Answer Made Her Cry

After Losing Everything, A Pregnant Woman Applied For A Job — The Mafia Boss’s Answer Made Her Cry The morning sun hung pale and cold over the Baltimore docks the day Ruth Delaney, twenty seven years old and seven months pregnant, stood at the loading bay of Voss Cold Storage and asked three laughing men for the lowest, dirtiest job they had. She'd sold her wedding ring the week before and her husband's old pocket watch shortly before that, and the only thing keeping her upright was the child turning slow beneath her ribs. The men told her to go home and have her baby somewhere that wasn't their problem, that this wasn't a shelter and she wasn't the kind of help anybody hired. She didn't beg. She just kept standing there in the thin gray light, one hand pressed flat against her belly like a woman holding the last thing in the world she had left, until the laughter died all at once and every man on that dock went still and quiet the way men do when the ground shifts under them. Because August Voss had come out of the warehouse. He was thirty three years old, tall and unhurried, black hair going silver at the temples, gray eyes that didn't blink and didn't warm, and in that city his name was the kind you said softly or not at all. He ran the whole waterfront and half of what moved through it after dark, and grown men who feared nothing else were careful to fear him. He looked at the three who'd been laughing, and they found nothing left to say. Then he looked at the woman, and something crossed his face that none of his men had ever seen there before. Ruth was too tired to be afraid of him. She lifted her chin and said she could clean, she could count, she could work until the day the baby came and the day after too, and she'd take whatever he'd pay and be grateful for it. And then her knees gave out from three days without a proper meal, and the last thing she heard before the daylight went white and swam away was the man everyone feared telling his people, in a voice like a door closing, to catch her. When she woke it was in his office, wrapped in a coat that cost more than she'd made in a year, and she was already stammering an apology, already promising to work off the debt of that single kindness, when August Voss said the thing that broke her open right there on his couch. He told her he didn't need anyone to scrub his floors. He told her he needed someone with the nerve to stand on that dock in the cold morning when three grown men wanted her gone, and not run. He told her she was staying. And Ruth Delaney, who had buried a husband, lost her home, and been turned away from every door in that city, put her face in her hands and wept, because for the first time in longer than she could remember, someone had looked at everything the world had thrown away and called it worth keeping. What neither of them knew yet was that the man who'd wrecked her life was the same man circling August's, and that the reason a feared and merciless stranger had opened his door to a pregnant woman off the street went back to the day he was born thirty three years ago, and to another unspoken connection that tied their fates together years later.
