Don't Let The Chess Theme Fool You (STONEMACHIA)

Stonemachia is a dark action-adventure with soulslike elements where chess pieces, Italian folklore and biblical-inspired horrors collide in a surprisingly unique world. You play as Zefiro, a pawn capable of transforming into other chess pieces, each with their own abilities and combat style. I'll be honest: the concept is so strange that I wasn't sure what to expect. But after playing it, what impressed me most wasn't the chess theme, it was the gameplay. Combat feels responsive, boss encounters are genuinely engaging, and the game understands what makes a good soulslike: learning patterns, timing your defenses and gradually mastering difficult fights. There are a few rough edges, especially when reading certain enemy attacks due to unusual proportions and character silhouettes, but overall this ended up being one of the most enjoyable indie soulslikes I've played recently.
