Its Monument to Independence was the first of its kind in the entire country. Originally built in September 1791 to support a sculpture of the Spanish King Charles IV, it was later modified by Francisco Eduardo Tres Guerras as a tribute to Mexican Independence. The architect Tresguerras has been recognized as one of the forerunners and leading exponents of this architectural style in the Bajío region.
