Those who use this practice are called dowsers. This practice, known and practiced since the 3rd millennium BC in China and Egypt, has no scientific basis. Today, it is considered one of the methods of radiesthesia. More generally, the term refers to any form of divination involving the use of rods or sticks, being derived from the Greek words ῥάβδος (rhábdos, meaning "rod"), and μαντεία (mantéia, meaning "divination"). Numerous publications on the subject exist, so much so that Christopher Bird, in the preface to his book "The Divining Hand," cites the existence of at least 1,500 works. My interest in the topic dates back to 1998, when, needing to dig a well for agricultural use on our farm, I contacted a drilling company who recommended I consult a dowser. With some skepticism, I contacted the person I'd been given, and field tests were conducted. The dowser's findings proved true after digging the well, making me reconsider the possibility of this method. I wanted to try it myself and found that the dowsing rod moved in my hands, even independently of my will. The elderly dowser told me that I, too, could undertake this practice, and so I followed his advice. Water was needed to revive the Spora Piccola mountain hut, above Sporminore.
