The 1918 General Election, sometimes known as the Sinn Féin Election, as the party won 73 out of 105 seats, saw the overwhelming defeat of the moderate nationalist Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP). The IPP had dominated Irish politics since the 1880s, and the landslide victory for Sinn Féin was a monumental shift towards separatism from London. The successful Sinn Féin candidates refused to take their seats in Westminster and instead formed a parliament in Dublin on 21 January 1919, the first Dáil Éireann, which declared Irish independence. Joining Barry Sheppard to discuss the election are historian and broadcaster, Donal Fallon and economic historian from Queen's University, Dr Alan de Bromhead.
