Losing the Ability to Speak | Tim Schut | TEDxSiouxFalls
Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech. Never heard of it? Neither did Tim Schut’s neurologist who has been practicing medicine for 45 years; and the same for Tim’s speech pathologist. PPAOS is a rare disease – less than one in a million. In this TEDx talk Tim shares all about his diagnosis and about his journey to proactively ensure that when he does lose his total ability to speak, there is nothing that he won’t be prepared for. On June 21, 2021 Tim Schut was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech, a very rare brain neurodegenerative disease. Medical Professionals first discovered PPAOS as a brain neurodegenerative disease in 2010 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Tim has been given a 10-15 year life expectancy since his PPAOS diagnosis. His goal in that time is to cherish his family, build up his community, and now bring awareness to this disease as there is currently no developed treatments or cure. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
