Episode 2 Glyn Rhodes

Join Trav & Robbo as they interview Sheffield boxing royalty Glyn Rhodes at his gym (The Sheffield Boxing Centre). Glyn speaks about his early years growing up living with his grandparents and idolising his grandfather who served in the British Army during WWII and then worked in the steel industry (a proper mans man). We speak about school and the fact he didn't really leave with much other than a good bunch of mates (some of which are still close today). As is addressed in Glyn's book - Beyond Good & Evil we discuss his mental health struggles that followed after several tragic moments throughout Glyn's career. Glyn's mind is clearly open these days to the fact that men should speak about how they're feeling (eve though that's not the way he was brought up). Glyn tells us about discovering boxing at St Thomas' Hall - the late legendary Brendan Ingle's boxing gym. A gym that produced some real Sheffield boxing legends such as: Prince Naseem Hamed, Herol Graham, Johnny Nelson to name just a few. Brendan became a father-like figure to Glyn who managed him through 35 amateur and 65 professional bouts. When he retired from boxing in 1993, Glyn had no money, no prospects and genuinely didn't know what he would do from there. But just 1 year later Glyn opened the Sheffield Boxing Centre (SBC) and 30 years later he's still there day in day out teaching youngsters the art of boxing. Glyn reminisces about training Richie Wenton, Clinton Woods, Tommy Frank & the late Scott Wesgarth (RIP). Scott tragically died following a victory for an English title eliminator Vs Dec Spellman. Not only was Glyn in Scott's corner during the fight, he accompanied him in the ambulance ride to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. An ambulance ride that will haunt Glyn for eternity. We also discuss some of the boxing legends that Glyn has met throughout his years in the fight game. The one he didn't meet however, was for him the greatest of all time - Muhammed Ali and he speaks highly of him and his admiration for standing up for what he believed in. Glyn discussed the first time he met the now King Charles III at SBC and a funny story about the Royal visit. He also said that the MBE means so much to him and he's clearly proud to have been honoured in 2013. When asked who he thinks should play him if his life was a movie he suggested Robert DeNiro which I don't think he was joking about, but had me Trav and Robbo in stitches. Glyn discusses making peace with Brendan before he passed away only to be told not to attend his funeral - which was a dagger to the heart! Glyn was a perfect second guest and we're grateful for him being such a great sport!
