June 6, 2026, was German Armed Forces Day. On this occasion, approximately 550 officer candidates were commissioned as lieutenants or junior lieutenants during a formal ceremony at the Bundeswehr University. The ceremony was accompanied by music from the Bundeswehr Mountain Music Corps under the direction of Major Rudolf Piehlmayer. The Bavarian Anthem (Bayernlied), whose melody was composed in 1860 by Konrad Max Kunz and which has been the official anthem of the state of Bavaria since 1966, was performed. This was followed by the national anthem of the Federal Republic of Germany, whose melody was composed by Joseph Haydn in 1797. I found it impressive that a large number of the approximately 40,000 attendees sang along to both anthems. The ceremony concluded with the march-off of the honor guard carrying the Bundeswehr University Munich's regimental colors. The Bavarian Defilier March, whose melody was composed around 1850 by the Bavarian military musician Adolf Scherzer, is playing.
