Was Independence Enough? | Before the Red Dot with Donald Ramotar

In this second session of Before the Red Dot, we explore a central question in Guyana’s development: Was independence enough? Building on our first conversation — that Guyana was imagined before it was inherited — this discussion turns to the politics that shaped how that imagination became reality. Through the lived experience of former President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Donald Ramotar, we examine: • The expectations of independence • Whether true transformation ever followed • The role of external forces in shaping Guyana’s political path • The influence of labor movements in political awakening • And the extent to which today’s challenges reflect unresolved structures from the past This is not a conversation about party politics. It is a conversation about political formation — how ideas became movements, how movements became power, and how those moments continue to shape the Guyana we experience today.
