In everyday life, this type of lesion is commonly called a wart, but the correct technical name is acrochordons or fibroepithelial polyp. It's important to clarify that a wart is not just any protuberance or bump on the skin. In fact, a wart is a lesion caused by the HPV virus, and is very different from acrochordons. Warts tend to be rougher, rounder, and slightly larger, often appearing on the hands. On the other hand, skin tags are not related to the HPV virus. They are benign skin growths, pose no danger, are not associated with skin cancer, and are not transmissible. However, they can indicate an underlying condition known as insulin resistance. Insulin is the hormone responsible for allowing glucose to enter cells. When insulin resistance occurs, that is, when the hormone does not function properly, blood sugar levels can rise, resulting in diabetes. This condition is quite common in overweight people. Furthermore, some people have a genetic predisposition to developing skin tags, even without associated health problems. However, it is known that people with insulin resistance, excess weight, or diabetes are more likely to develop skin tags, or to have more of them. Another skin sign that may suggest insulin resistance is Pseudoacanthosis Nigricans. This condition is characterized by darkening of the skin, with a velvety texture. It is often seen on the neck and armpits, areas where skin tags also commonly appear. Skin Tag Treatment The most traditional method involves a medical consultation. The doctor, usually a dermatologist, numbs each wart with an anesthetic cream or, in some cases, a small injection of local anesthetic. Removal can be done surgically or through cauterization with an electric scalpel. Another available technique is cryotherapy, which consists of freezing the lesion. This destroys the wart tissue, which falls off a few days later. It is a simple and quick procedure, with rapid healing, performed in an office setting. Home Treatments Some people suggest home methods, such as tying a thread or a strand of hair to the base of the skin tag, cutting off blood flow to the lesion, which causes it to necrose and fall off after a few days. While this method can be effective, it is important to exercise caution when performing treatments without medical supervision, as there is a risk of local infection. This risk is particularly relevant for people with diabetes, as the condition increases the likelihood of infections. Despite these risks, this technique can be effective in many cases.
