The first mention of a German colonist settlement in Mühlhausen dates back to 1350, when a church was built. A mill on the Baislyai River (Rezvaya River) was first mentioned in 1372. In 1414, Mühlhausen was devastated by the Polish invasion, and the settlement suffered greatly during the war of 1454-1466. In the 1460s, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Ludwig von Erlichshausen, granted the Mühlhausen estate to the mercenary commander Daniel von Kunheim as payment for services rendered to the Order, initially as collateral, and then as property from 1474. From 1560 to 1590, the rector of the Mühlhausen church was the priest Kaspar Hennenberger. Under the patronage of the Duke of Prussia, Hannenberger compiled the first map of the entire territory of Prussia, which was published in 1576 at a scale of 1:400,000. Mühlhausen was home to the daughter of church reformer Martin Luther, Margaretha, who married Georg Wilhelm von Kunheim, the grandson of Daniel von Kunheim. Since 1645, Mühlhausen has belonged to the von Kalckstein family. The population of Mühlhausen was 585 in 1910, 968 in 1933, and 941 in 1939. Before the outbreak of World War II, Mühlhausen had a church, a school, a mill, two inns, and several shops and artisan businesses. From January 25-27, 1945, Mühlhausen was captured by soldiers of the 159th Vitebsk Red Banner, Order of Suvorov and Kutuzov Rifle Division of the 5th Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front.
